I don't recommend using the 'Select All' button above the text, it seems to be spotty at best.

The first column is frame number (at 29.97fps). The rest of the columns are vertical positions in pixels. I believe there are 19 of them. The column headers for this data are of form RowXXX where XXX is the numeric value of the threshold used to obtain that column of data. They are very close but not the same, of course, for the reasons mentioned above. Any or all could be used. I'd average them, but that's me.

Sorry there's no scale factor available yet, but it is the left edge of the cropped image I posted before the smears. Not the same scale as for the NW corner. I'll try to do that soon.

In the above smearograms also some of the artifacts are visible... I'm wondering if it could be caused by the fact that the building also tilts a little bit to the left. OWE, yes that video I created seems still be active, maybe it is funny to put it also on youtube. I've seen the Chanler/NIST video, it is amazing how dr. Sunder talks about gravity, like he talks to a bunch of kids. But to me he looks like a friendly man who for sure is forced to support the single column collapse in contrast to John Gross who looks as a natural born scumbag that probably would sell his own mother for money.
I think Chandler is right that the function has no physical meaning and we have already seen here that it is utter nonsense, how could a reputed institute support something like that?

I left the zero leader, that has to be trimmed. Also the last record or two may need to be trimmed. I think my choice of threshold range could have been higher to give a better result. The higher numbered thresholds seem to be better, the lower the number the more ragged. These graphs show the variation of results across the threshold range:

All, small:

Image

Primary curve, large:

http://i41.tinypic.com/9j29fr.jpg

Blue is higher threshold (115), green is lower (97). Blue looks much better but I'm not sure which is really more accurate. Needs to be laid over the smear for comparison. The curves do diverge considerably in the latter portion, these clearly won't produce the same fits. Nevertheless, these are different snapshots of the same edge.

Hi, einsteen.

wondering if it could be caused by the fact that the building also tilts a little bit to the left.

This is definitely a factor. I suspect the jumps in the later portion are video-related. Many different sources to sort out.

yes that video I created seems still be active, maybe it is funny to put it also on youtube.

With no explanation! Can you imagine stumbling across that? Put tags like Britney Spears, etc.

Sunder talks about gravity, like he talks to a bunch of kids.

He is a master of compound sentences, I ah, eh, uh -- I, uh, ah, uh, understand.

John Gross who looks as a natural born scumbag that probably would sell his own mother for money.

Haha

I do not know. This is something I wonder about; also why they even changed the final, since it was at least consistent. The late additions don't seem to be of the same caliber.

OWE:

Thanks for the excellent data!

I have done a quick plot taking my t(0) as frame 260. I used a scaling factor of 18.1 cm = 1 vertical pixel and I subtracted 66 pixels from the vertical pixel data to get my d(0) - the zero drop reference line! This calibration gives a total vertical drop of 62 meters. Here's what I find:

I need two fitting functions to represent the drop data over the full range you have posted - one for drop times up to 1.2 seconds and another for times above 1.2 seconds and up to 4.2 seconds. The drop from zero to 1.2 seconds is only 2 meters but the data you have posted fits a second order polynomial function very well:

Drop (in meters) = 1.33t^2 + 0.0863t + 0.1095

As you can see, the initial acceleration is very low - only about 2.7 m/s^2.

After 1.2 seconds the acceleration picks up considerably and averages about 9.2 m/s^2 over the entire range from zero to 4.2 seconds.

This is where Chandler's analysis falls short. He cannot even "see" drops less than 1 meter, but insists that the collapse starts very abruptly. In truth the collapse is very slow to start, as a drop of only 2 meters in the first 1.2 seconds shows. Thus Chandler cannot precisely define a t(0) and therefore cannot estimate the acceleration very precisely either.

Interestingly I get the impression that the NW corner does start descending more abruptly than the center of the roofline. If you would be so kind as to post your data for column 460 I could check that out .....

But does it really matter ? Assume you create smearograms from controlled demolitions, like we did before, smearograms that are indistinguishable from CD smearograms, what would we see there ? Would we see a rapid onset starting at t=0 with an acceleration of 9.2 m/s^2 or would we see some movement before the global collapse ? Would we see some movement first because the charges are demolishing the supporting structure first ? I'm almost sure (although that should be verified) that a CD, which has the same characteristics as wtc7's collapse, also has a period in which some movement can be found before the global collapse. If we take the behaviour of the penthouses it is even possible to bring t=0 even more in the past. Isn't the important thing that the collapse is almost perfectly symmetric and that it is extremely fast after a certain onset period ?

Einsteen:

I try not to make any assumptions about a given smearogram other than it is a great way to image a structural collapse. It gives you an "instant" (drop vs. time) collapse curve.

Your point about pre-collapse movement, (especially as it applies to the roofline of WTC 7), is very interesting, ....... I'm not sure what it really means..... but I do not see it as "proof" of a CD.

One thing to remember is that free fall is o.k. only for a "point" mass such as a cannon ball, but WTC 7 was NOT a point mass. It was a massive voluminous structure that could flex, bend and sway even under "normal" stresses from wind, low velocity impact or possible earth tremors.

When such a structure collapses its roofline motion is likely to be very complex at the start - that is during the first 2 meters or so of vertical descent. Thanks to your work, and that of OWE, smearograms offer the capability of detecting and graphing such motions, but we must be VERY careful in concluding what these pre-collapse oscillations mean.

I would expect the earliest signs of global collapse of any building to exhibit exponential growth, which means t(0), like an honest man, is hard to find..........

Dr. G wrote:Thanks for the excellent data!

You're welcome. It pains me to say this... (should I?)... I could've done this a long time ago.

I have done...

a fabulous thing. I was thrilled when I logged on and saw this. Thank you for the (quick) effort.

Here's what I find:

I need two fitting functions to represent the drop data over the full range you have posted - one for drop times up to 1.2 seconds and another for times above 1.2 seconds and up to 4.2 seconds.

Yes! I feel vindicated (not that anyone was objecting) for expressing the need to do piecewise fits. I'd wager, if we could get the last 2.5 seconds of the fall, you'd need a third segment to complete the fit. NIST should have done piecewise fits. I hope they get their money back.

This is fascinating! Excellent work! The value of 9.2 m/s^2 is beginning to look quite solid.

That certainly sums it up well. I guess you know I've not been impressed by his work; it may seem like I've been vitriolic but charitable is actually closer to the truth. Nothing against the guy personally but technically it's another matter. It would have been nice if he'd been willing to discuss it a little.

Interestingly I get the impression that the NW corner does start descending more abruptly than the center of the roofline.

It does. A quick and dirty set of manual points earlier indicated the center began moving sooner and slower, whereas the NW corner was later but abrupt and, after a time, they were at similar displacement.

If you would be so kind as to post your data for column 460 I could check that out .....

Absolutely. In fact, it's already out of the oven <wink>. It wasn't quite what I expected. Coming right up.

Pretty much same deal as before except this time there are only 8 thresholds used, spaced 5 units apart. This is a much broader range than the last set, yet giving a good edge. Despite the range, the values for all thresholds are very close. The last data column is the average of the 8 values in the record; you'll see why I included it in a moment.

A couple of records had to be trimmed from the end because of missing data but otherwise it's straight out of the frying pan into your lap (is the cooking metaphor growing old?). I was going to trim the first 200 frames off the front, but then I saw something that changed my mind.

Dr. G:

I'd mentioned that I'd be inclined to do an average of these sets of edge position values, and einsteen had also talked earlier about increasing the resolution in the same manner by multiple passes. Each of the data columns represents an equally valid snapshot, but they're not all the same. The reason they are different is not because of noise or error, it's because of information.

Please examine this plot which shows the long period of 'zero baseline' and early displacement. All eight of the series from the data above are included:

Image

You can see that, once things get moving, the values are very tight. But, over the baseline period, there seems to be a bunch of random noise as the signals drift up and down by one pixel.

Seems. Look closer and see if anything jumps out at you before peeking at the next post.

A little salad, a baked potato

To say the least, I'm very pleased at the content of your latest post.

I would never intentionally hold out on the raw data, and now I realize I should've just done this quick and dirty stuff along time ago - you have no idea how easy it is. These posts take much longer to put together than the associated dataset. Literally, I change three characters in code, run, and there's another series. A little time to home in on the right threshold range, but basically it's minutes.

But you have to understand that I was looking for some really high quality data and I didn't realize you were going to turn a sow's ear into a silk purse - like that!

So, of course, we will serve raw! But I also want you to appreciate the cooked:

The graph above is the average of the eight series, the simplest means of aggregating the multiple series into a single set. If you look back at the overlay plot of the eight, you'll see that there is order apparent in the color distribution and frequency of oscillation between the two pixel values. I'm not good enough to read data from it directly, but averaging does the trick.

Does it look familiar? This is the plot of the vertical data on the big dark rectangle I posted early in the thread:

Image

These are two radically different kinds of features, in different but nearby locations, processed in an entirely different way by two unrelated scripts. It's not accident or error. You cautioned against throwing the early data away, but I was skeptical because it looked funky and I had low expectations anyway. However, the similarity in shapes of these two graphs cast a different light on it. There is no reason to expect the amplitudes or (more intriguing) the phase to be the same, and it seems they aren't. Still, this is the shape of the early vertical motion.

Next time, no words, just a bunch of datasets. I'll do more of these smears and try to get some on the east end as well. You want sets for the entire width - eventually - or is that overkill?

OWE:

Thanks for the column 460 data set! As usual you have done great work that gives me plenty of numbers to play with, .... for now!

I have done the same quick analysis that I posted for column 260 so here are a few initial comments on the results so far:

First of all, I was going to use the same vertical pixel calibration that I used for the previous column 260 data set, (i.e. 1 pixel = 18.1 cm) but then I realized that you need to apply a perspective correction as you move across the face of the building. This turns out to be 0.944 for the NW corner compared to the center of the roofline so I used 1 pixel = 17.1 cm for the 460 column data set. (This varies slightly with height, also due to perspective, but I am ignoring this for now!) I transcribed the data as before but this time I needed to subtract 21 from the vertical pixel counts to establish my zero drop reference line.

The resulting column 460 drop vs. time curve is remarkably similar to the column 260 curve, but close inspection of the two curves shows they actually oscillate about each other! Initially the NW corner lags behind the center of the roofline by a distance of about 20 cm, but catches up and overtakes the center after about 1 second. In the next 1/2 second the NW corner gets about 1 meter ahead of the center, but then starts to slow (relative to the center) until the drop distances are again equal about 2 seconds into the collapse - truly amazing! This process is then repeated over the 2 - 4 second drop time interval.

I believe this oscillation is a real effect and is probably due to small amplitude (+/- 1 meter) transverse vibrations of the roofline north framing beam. I suspect this was caused by the release of the stored potential energy involved in the initial, pre-collapse, bowing of the roof. It's like plucking a guitar string (and simultaneously dropping the guitar!) I guess .....

OWE, any confirmation (or thoughts!) on this would be most helpful!
